Biocrusts contribute to a higher water-holding capacity and lower infiltrability. Biocrusts under shrubs decrease soil moisture by 14.8% compared to no crust. Biocrusts reduce soil water available to A. ordosica so as to cause shrub mortality. Soil moisture decreased by crusts will not restore after the death of A. ordosica. Biocrusts can become a dominant factor for soil moisture under semiarid climate.
