Two essential peritrophic matrix proteins mediate matrix barrier functions in the insect midgut

We examined putative peritrophic matrix proteins (PMPs) from Tribolium castaneum.

The PMP genes are differentially expressed along the length of the midgut.

PM permeability decreases from the anterior to the posterior midgut.

RNAi for two essential PMP genes leads to starvation and developmental defects.

These PMP genes are crucial for the maintenance of the PM's barrier function.
