The bacteriophage SPP1 lysis cassette carries two holin-like genes flanking the endolysin gene. Both holin-like products insert in the cytoplasmic membrane and cell killing seems to require their simultaneous action. The first gene of the lytic operon carries an internal promoter, probably corresponding to the SPP1 early promoter PE5.
