Design and development of a probe-based multiplexed multi-species absorption spectroscopy sensor for characterizing transient gas-parameter distributions in the intake systems of I.C. engines

A compact probe-based sensor for measurement of temperature, pressure, and H2O and CO2 concentrations is described. Spectral parameters for the utilized CO2 absorption transition are validated using heated gas cell measurements. Uncertainty and accuracy of the multi-parameter sensor is characterized and found to be within acceptable limits. Dynamic etalons in the probe optical arrangement are identified as the primary noise source limiting uncertainty in the gas property measurements. The sensor enables gradient mapping and simultaneous multi-location gas property measurements in internal combustion engines with minimal modification to the base hardware.
