GAGs are complex molecules that have multiple roles in several tissues. Qualitative and quantitative methods have been developed to reveal the biological and pathological roles of GAGs. Mass spectrometry has been developed to measure GAGs with rapid, sensitive, and accurate analysis. High throughput platforms can be used for rapid GAG analysis being suitable for newborn screening. GAG assay is applicable to diagnosis, prognosis, and screening for mucopolysaccharidoses.
