4H-Chromenes were synthesized from benzylidenemalonates and 1,3-dicarbonyls. The reactions proceed under simple reaction conditions. Michael addition and Ullmann-type coupling are two key features in the domino process. The elimination of stabilized carbanion is rationalized as the competitive reaction.
