A total of 93 microbial metabolites were found in 78 ear rot infected maize samples. Aflatoxins and fumonisins reached 31,300 μg/kg and 1,000,000 μg/kg respectively. Aflatoxin P1, a demethyl derivative of AFB1, is first reported in maize. There was evidence of mycotoxin variation in maize across the sampled states. Fumonisins, AFB1 and aflatoxins exceeded EU limit in 76, 50 and 47% of samples respectively.
