Optimal landing site selection based on safety index during planetary descent

Aimed at improving landing safety, the factors considered in the landing site selection process are more complete. Besides terrain safety and fuel consumption, the paper considers touchdown performances when assessing the landing area. The landing site selection process is considered as an optimization problem for the first time and the safety index is proposed in the paper as an effective method to solve it. A selection strategy which cuts down the computation effort significantly is added into the process for better online implementation. The safety index-based landing site selection method is flexible and can be adjusted according to different planetary exploration missions. In the simulation part, a Mars Science Laboratory-based landing scenario is adopted to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method.
