A small animal model with a vomiting reflex, musk shrew, was used to investigate inhalational anesthesia-induced emesis. Abdominal vagotomy did not affect isoflurane-induced emesis. Isoflurane exposure increased c-Fos-positive cells in the vestibular nuclei and the nucleus of the solitary tract. These results suggest that isoflurane activates emesis by action on the hindbrain.
