Eastern oysters remain quiescent, with closed valves, for nearly half the year. This quiescence behaviour is induced by exposure to winter temperatures (< 4 °C). Sediment burial increased variability in the onset of quiescence. Both autumnal and winter burial augmented mortality rates relative to control oysters.
