A new method for consistent 3-phase LES simulation of cavitating injector flow and spray break-up by combining Eulerian–Eulerian and Volume-of-Fluid methods is presented. The Eulerian–Eulerian cavitation model, applied between the liquid and the vapor phase, predicted correctly the different regimes, as there are cavitation inception, developed cavitation and super cavitation. The Volume-of-Fluid model, applied as surface-tracking model for the liquid–gas interface, provided a detailed description of the liquid disintegration process influenced by nozzle turbulence and cavitation. The performed research study illustrates the influence of the different cavitation regimes on spray break-up and spray angle. A quantification of the detached ligaments by evaluation of the volume-equivalent droplet diameter was performed.
