Hydro-mechanical behaviors of soil are coupled by porosity in Biot's consolidation. Effective stress carried by soil skeleton depends on the structure of soil. Boundary conditions of soil base are absorbed in the stiffness matrix of soil layers. Increasing porosity causes a higher settlement and a faster rate of consolidation.
