We propose a new theory for the mechanical properties of fivefold twinned nanowires.

The Frank vector of the central wedge disclination is shown to be strain-dependent.

The influence of the fivefold twinned structure on Young's modulus is revealed.

The theory explains material-dependent deformation behavior in atomistic simulations.

Furthermore, the size-dependence of the elastic properties of nanowires is addressed.
