Observed performance of retaining structures in recent earthquakes is reviewed. Current analysis recommendations and their limitations are investigated. Recent experimental data is reviewed and new data is presented and compared. A depth-averaged acceleration for the seismic coefficient is proposed. Numerical simulations are discussed and compared to centrifuge experiments.
