One rhodamine based chemodosimeter for Cu2+ has been synthesized. The proposed sensing mechanism is due to Cu2+ promoted spirolactam ring opening followed by hydrolysis. This probe shows high selectivity over other anions and metal ions with detection limit upto 60 nM. The sensor is suitable for confocal cell imaging studies.
