Detrital zircons of Liuling Group explain its provenance and tectonic setting. 500–400 Ma, 850–700 Ma and 1000–900 Ma are three prominent age clusters. Source rocks were dominated by the North and South Qinling belt. 500–400 Ma zircons were derived from uplift rocks of North Qinling belt. Liuling Group was deposited in a post-orogen-related extensional basin.
