An LiTDI-electrolyte is used for the first time with Si-based composite electrodes.

HAXPES was used to follow SEI formation using the new LiTDI salt.

The LiTDI salt is fairly stable and does not form detrimental byproducts with Si.

HAXPES can be used to monitor mechanisms going on even below thick SEI layers.

LiTDI is a promising electrolyte salt for Si-based electrodes.
