The role of solid–solid phase transitions on mantle convection is reviewed. Phase transitions affect the patterns of mantle convection and chemical layering. The effects of equilibrium phase transitions vary with the system composition. Disequilibrium phase transitions are relevant within the cold and dry lithosphere.
