Neuroimaging studies revealed widespread alterations in the brains of drug-abusers. These findings have been ascribed to vascular complications or hypoxia–ischemia. Neuropathological studies showed widespread impairment of the cellular elements. Recent studies provided evidence of accelerated brain aging and neurodegeneration.
