We reconstruct C3/C4 paleovegetation from northwest Argentina from 6.2–3.3 Ma.
We use both the si1" class="mathmlsrc">si1.gif&_user=111111111&_pii=S0012821X14001587&_rdoc=1&_issn=0012821X&md5=113cb472f8b1a5d6ae5f5f9b73487190">si1.gif"> of soil organic matter and phytoliths preserved in paleosols.
Both methods show an expansion of C3 grasses during the Miocene rise of C4 grasses.
The Andes uplift caused a climatic cooling which drove C3 grasses to outcompete C4.
The modern ecosystem was in place in northwest Argentina by 3.5 Ma.
