We study provenance of volcanic mortar aggregates used in Roman maritime construction. We provide geochemical analyses on 14 sea-water concretes from the Tyrrhenian coast. Results of our study show selective use of volcanic rocks exploited around Pozzuoli. Mixing with local volcanic products is also evidenced at two fishponds near Rome. We prove that the selection of materials was not consequence of different properties. We conclude that ubiquitous use of Campanian rocks has logistic and economic reasons.
