Ds-HMGB1 and fr-HMGB induce depressive behavior through neuroinflammation in contrast to nonoxid-HMGB1

Both ds-HMGB1 and fr-HMGB1 induce depressive behavior. The depressive behavior induced by ds-HMGB1 is related to TLR4 activation and a subsequent TNF-α increase. Fr-HMGB1 evokes depressive behavior through TLR4, RAGE and CXCR4, which are related to TNF-α induction. Nonoxid-HMGB1 cannot induce depressive behavior or a central TNF-α increase.
