The response of a benthic bacterial community to a phytoplankton bloom was studied.

Phytoplankton material was heavily degraded only when it reached the sediment.

The abundance of benthic bacteria and chlorophyll were correlated.

Bacterial community composition shifted rapidly through-out the bloom.

This was due to an increase in relative abundance of members of the Flavobacteria.
