Nano-TiO2 particle and HHP were used to improve functionality of PVA–CHI films.

HHP changed layered microstructure of films into homogeneous and compact structure.

HHP improved water vapor, gas barrier and mechanical properties of films.

Nano-TiO2 gave PVA–CHI films with better antibacterial and mechanical properties.

Nano-TiO2 migrated from 200 to 400 MPa treated films into olive oil was < 4.20 × 10− 3‰.
