A naphthalimide-based chemosensor for cyanide was designed and synthesized.

The novel mechanism involving activation of latent intramolecular Br⋯Hsingle bondC hydrogen bonding was developed.

The sensor exhibited high selectivity, larger emission shifts and ratiometric fluorescence changes.
