We have found flavohemoglobin (yHb) in the intermembrane space of S. cerevisiae mitochondria. The ligand-binding kinetics is different in the mitochondrial and cytosolic yHbs. The structure of the mitochondrial yHb is presumably different from that of the cytosolic fraction. Cytochrome c oxidase in the two S. cerevisiae strains BY4741 and W303 reacts with equal rates with O2.
