Arene–Ruthenium Chemistry and Br?nsted Acid Catalysis of a Chiral Phosphane-Hydroxyl Ligand

The phosphane-hydroxyl ligand (SC1,RC2)-Ph2PC(Ph)HC(OH)HCH2OMe (POH) displays 魏1P, 魏2P,O, 魏3P,O,O鈥? and anionic deprotonated 魏3P,O,O鈥?coordination modes toward the metallic (畏6-p-MeC6H4iPr)Ru moiety. The hydroxyl group in [(畏6-p-MeC6H4iPr)Ru(魏3P,O,O鈥?POH)][SbF6]2 (3) has strong acidic properties. This complex catalyzes the Diels鈥揂lder reaction between cyclopentadiene and trans-尾-nitrostyrene or methacrolein as well as the Friedel鈥揅rafts reaction between indole and methyl 3,3,3,-trifluoropyruvate or trans-尾-nitrostyrene. Solution studies strongly indicate that complex 3 acts as a metallic Lewis acid assisted Br酶nsted-acid catalyst.
