A QCM device employing ionic liquids as the sensingmaterials for organic vapors has been developed andevaluated. The sensing mechanism is based on the factthat the viscosity of the ionic liquid membrane decreasesrapidly due to solubilization of analytes in the ionicliquids. This change in viscosity, which varies with thechemical species of the vapors and the types of ionicliquids, results in a frequency shift of the correspondingquartz crystal. The QCM sensor demonstrated a rapidresponse (average response time of less than 2 s) toorganic vapors with an excellent reversibility because ofthe fast diffusion of analytes in ionic liquids. Furthermore, the ionic liquids, with zero vapor pressure and stablechemical properties, ensure a long-term shelf life for thesensor.
