The formation of organosulfates from the gas-phaseozonolysis of -pinene in the presence of neutral or acidicsulfate particles was investigated in a series of indooraerosol chamber experiments. The organosulfates wereanalyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (LC)coupled to electrospray ionization-time-of-flight massspectrometry (MS) in parallel to ion trap MS. Organosulfateswere only found in secondary organic aerosol from-pinene ozonolysis in the presence of acidic sulfateseed particles. One of the detected organosulfates alsooccurred in ambient aerosol samples that were collectedat a forest site in northeastern Bavaria, Germany. -Pineneoxide, an oxidation product in -pinene/O3 and -pinene/NO3 reactions, is identified as a possible precursor for the-pinene-derived organosulfate. Furthermore, severalnitroxy-organosulfates originating from monoterpenes werefound in the ambient samples. These nitroxy-organosulfateswere only detected in the nighttime samples, suggestinga role for nighttime chemistry in their formation. Their LC/MS chromatographic peak intensities suggest that theyrepresent an important fraction of the organic mass in ambientaerosols, especially at night.
