Using EPR spectroscopy and spin-labeled ligands, wehave studied product distribution in the ligand exchangereactions of Au nanoparticles. When the incoming ligandwas used in excess, the exchanged nanoparticles haduniform composition of the organic shell. PreparativeGPC was employed to fractionate these materials according to the diameter of the Au core, as confirmed by TEM,UV, and EPR measurements. When the exchange reactionwas carried out with less than a stoichiometric amountof the incoming ligand, nanoparticles with polydispersecomposition of the organic shell were formed. This wasestablished by the EPR analysis of the exchange reactionmixtures following their GPC fractionation. The GPCseparation of these mixtures is controlled by both Au coresize and shell composition.
