It is generally acknowledged that enantiomer separationsin capillary electrophoresis are based on differences inthe affinities of the analyte enantiomers toward the chiralselector expressed as equilibrium constants of the resulting temporary diastereomeric associates. However, as canbe derived from theoretical considerations, a separationof enantiomers by CE is in principle also possible solelybased on differences in the mobilities of the temporarydiastereomeric complexes per se, when equal bindingconstants between analyte enantiomers and the chiralselector are assumed and observed.
