Several asphalts were fractionated using supercritical pentane. These fractions were analyzedby gel permeation chromatography and high-performance liquidchromatography, and theirviscosities were measured. The properties of these fractions varynot only among the fractionsof a given asphalt but also for the same fraction produced fromdifferent asphalts. These widelyvaried fractions previously have been shown to have potential forreblending to produce superiorasphalts. This study investigates the potential for using some ofthe fractions as asphalt recyclingagents. A modified strategic highway research program (SHRP)pressure aging vessel (PAV)test and kinetics studies were conducted on nine recycled asphalts andthe original asphalt. The aging indexes of eight of the recycled asphalts are superiorto the aging index of the originalasphalt. Two of the blends using industrial supercriticalfractions and the three blends usinglaboratory supercritical fractions have lower aging indexes than blendsusing commercialrecycling agents. The kinetics investigation also indicates thatat road conditions the recycledasphalts will harden more slowly than the original asphalt. Thedegree of hardening for a givenamount of oxidation in the recycled binders was found to be a strongfunction of the total saturatecontent in the recycled binder.
