A practical and efficient kilogram-scale preparation of 1,4-anhydroerythritol from meso-erythritol is described. A novelsilica gel and sodium bicarbonate slurry/filtration protocol isutilized to purify the product, giving commercial-grade materialin 60-65% yield.
