Case-based studies have been used for years in business, law, and medical education but have only recently been applied to science education. The spring 2011 online ConfChem conference, Case-Based Studies in Chemical Education, showcases pioneering work in the application of case studies to chemical education. This conference was held from May 6 to June 20, 2011 and was organized by Clyde F. Herreid, director of the National Center for Case Study Teaching in Science (NCCSTS) and hosted by the ACS Committee on Computers in Chemical Education. This communication is the first of eight based on the presentations in this conference, introduces the NCCSTS, ConfChem conferences, and provides an overview of the use of case studies in chemical education.r>Keywords:
