Layered zinc 4,4'-biphenylylenebis(phosphonate),Zn2(O3PC12H8PO3)·2H2O(I), has been synthesized and itsstructure solved and refined by using X-ray powder diffraction data. The compound crystallizes in the spacegroup Pnn2 with a = 27.904(1) Å, b= 4.8273(3) Å, c = 5.6450(2) Å, and Z= 2. The zinc atoms in thiscompound have distorted octahedral geometry. The phosphonateoxygens bind to zinc through chelation andbridging similar to those found in zinc phenylphosphonate and zincphenylenebis(phosphonate) reported earlier. The water oxygen atom occupies the sixth coordination site. This paper also reports three mixed zincarylenebis(phosphonate)/phosphate compounds,Zn2(O3PC6H4PO3)0.75(HPO4)0.5·2.5H2O(II),Zn2(O3PC12H8PO3)0.75(HPO4)0.5·2.5H2O(III), andZn(HO3PC12H8PO3H)0.82(HPO4)0.18(IV). Their structures were characterized byX-raydiffraction, IR spectroscopy, solid state 31P NMRspectroscopy, and TGA. It was found that the structuresofcompounds II and III are similar to those oftheir corresponding parent phosphonates but compound IVcontainsa different type of metal-phosphonate framework. BETmeasurements show that the surface areas of thesephosphonates have been largely increased after introducing phosphategroups, mainly however due to mesoporosity.
