The need to use resources efficiently and reduceenvironmental impacts of industrial products and processesis becoming increasingly important in engineering design;therefore, green engineering principles are gainingprominence within engineering education. This paperdescribes a general framework for incorporating greenengineering design principles into engineering curricula, with specific examples for chemical engineering. Theframework for teaching green engineering discussed inthis paper mirrors the 12 Principles of Green Engineeringproposed by Anastas and Zimmerman (Environ. Sci. Technol.2003, 37, 94A-101A), especially in methods for estimatingthe hazardous nature of chemicals, strategies for pollutionprevention, and approaches leading to efficient energy andmaterial utilization. The key elements in green engineeringeducation, which enlarge the "box" for engineeringdesign, are environmental literacy, environmentally consciousdesign, and beyond-the-plant boundary considerations.
