This work presents a new adsorption technique wherethe adsorbent (powdered activated carbon-PAC) is in theform of suspended flocs formed with water-solublepolymer flocculants. Thus, the adsorption of a typical dye, methylene blue (MB), was studied onto polyacrylamideflocs of PAC (PACF) in a fluidized bed reactor. The techniqueis based on the fact that the adsorption capacity of PACdoes not decrease after flocculation because the adsorbedpolymer occupies only a few surface sites, in the formof trains, loops, and tails. Moreover, the adsorption wasfound to proceed through a rapid mass transfer of MB tothe adsorbing PAC flocs, in the same extent as ontoPAC. Because of the rapid settling characteristics of theaggregates formed, the two phase separations, loaded PACand solution, become easier. Thus, the technique offersthe advantages of conducting simultaneously both adsorptionand solid/liquid separation all in one single stage. Resultsobtained showed that high MB removal values can beattained in a fluidized bed reactor (>90%) and that PACFpresents a much higher adsorption capacity (breakthroughpoints) than granulated activated carbon (GAC) in thesame adsorbing bed. It is believed that this technique highlybroadens the potential of the use of powdered activatedcarbon or other similar ultrafine adsorbents.
