A novel cross-linked pyroelectric polymer with pronouncedsecond-order nonlinear optical properties hasbeen prepared. A multistep synthesis with several selectivetransformations including a kinetic resolution (transesterification) with the highly enantioselective Candidaantarctica lipase B, yielded the monomer4''-{(R)-(-)-2-[(10-acryloyloxy)decyl]oxy}-3-nitrophenyl4-{4'-[(11-acryloyloxy)undecyloxy]phenyl} benzoateA2c which displayeda ferroelectric chiral smectic C phase with large spontaneouspolarization (175 nC/cm2). The monomer waspoledand subsequently cross-linked by in-situ photopolymerizationin the surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystallinestate. The cross-linked pyroelectric polymer exhibited anelectro-optical coefficient (r22 -r12) of 15-35 pm/V.
