Hybrid nanobeads containing either a manganese鈥搊xo or manganese鈥搃ron鈥搊xo cluster have been prepared via the miniemulsion polymerization technique. Two new ligand substituted oxo clusters, Mn12sub>O12sub>(VBA)16sub>(H2sub>O)4sub> and Mn8sub>Fe4sub>O12sub>(VBA)16sub>(H2sub>O)4sub> (where VBA = 4-vinylbenzoate), have been prepared and characterized. Polymerization of the functionalized metal鈥搊xo clusters with styrene under miniemulsion conditions produced monodispersed polymer nanoparticles as small as 60 nm in diameter. The metal鈥搊xo polymer nanobeads were fully characterized in terms of synthetic parameters, composition, structure, and magnetic properties.
