The synthesis of a neutral nickel(II) complexof 2-(2,6-diisopropylanilino)tropone is described. Theimportant attributes of this ligand include a hinderedN-aryl ring, a five-membered-ring chelate, and ananionic N-donor. The complex has been characterizedin the solid state by X-ray crystallography, and relevantfeatures are discussed. The nickel complex is capable ofpolymerizing ethylene with a turnover frequency of upto 8.8 × 106 g of PE (mol of catalyst)-1 h-1 and ofproducing polyethylenes with a wide range of branchingnumbers by changes in pressure and temperature. Thecatalyst shows an excellent tolerance for polar additivesin ethylene polymerization experiments and is quiteinsensitive to added PPh3.1
