Nonisothermal effects are known to be generally important ingas-phase adsorption processes. This paper considers the role of a weakly adsorbed carrier gas inpressure swing adsorption forpurification. A combination of experimental and mathematicalmodeling results is presentedin order to understand and describe the influence of the carrier gas onthe behavior of the bed.Dry air is fed to beds of BPL activated carbon. Variationsconsider a feed of pure helium anda packing of glass beads or an empty column. The role of the heatcapacity of the end regionsof the bed is emphasized. For air with activated carbon, whichadsorbs weakly with insignificantseparation of nitrogen and oxygen, periodic state behavior leads tosubcooling of the feed-inletend of the bed and, for cycles of moderately short duration, totemperature rectification, or theestablishment of a permanent oscillating temperature wave in the bed.The effect of thevolumetric purge-to-feed ratio on the extent of this region and degreeof subcooling is examined.
