Synthesis of various polyesters involving oligothiophene (2-5)units has led to materialsexhibiting a good processability together with tunable absorption (from342 to 428 nm) andfluorescence (from 411 to 558 nm) properties. It has been alsofound that polyesters withquaterthiophene or pentathiophene units show some electroactivityaffording the formationof radical cations and dimerized radical cations, while pentathiopheneunits even permitthe formation of negative charge carriers. The presence of thesecharge carriers increasesdramatically the conductivity to values up to 0.4 S/cm in both oxidizedand reduced states. This good electrical transport of both p-type and n-type chargecarriers combined withluminescent properties and Langmuir-Blodgett processability couldlead to well-organizedand efficient light-emitting devices.
