We propose a concept of supra
molecular
materials for effective all-optical generation of surface reliefstructures and optical anisotropy. The
materials are based on the ionic interactions between photochro
micazobenzene units and polyelectrolytes. The
materials are easy to produce and they allow the inscriptionof the 1.8

mally very stable. Both distinctive features of the new
materials, na
mely, the dyna
mic behavior of
molecular orientationand the high ther
mal stability of surface structures, have been explained in ter
ms of the network ofoppositely charged ions inherent to the
materials. Due to the si
mplicity and versatility of the concept, thenew fa
mily of
materials for different applications in optics, sensorics, and biology
may be designed.
