Capillary electrophoresis has been used to separate metalions characteristically associated with nuclear fission.Indirect UV absorbance and on-line radioactivitydetectionwere used simultaneously to monitor the analytes. Theradioactivity detector consists of conical plasticscintillating material with the capillary passing through the centerto provide a 4
detection geometry. The wide end ofthecone is optically coupled to a photomultiplier tube.Transient isotachophoretic techniques were employedtostack large volumes of samples which had low specificactivities. Radioactivity detection of
152Eu and
137Cs wasachieved at the nanocurie level for 80-100 nLinjections. The detector is approximately 80% efficient, enablingsamples resident in the detector window for 0.1 min tobe reliably assayed. The separation of
137Cs and
137mBaisotopes, which are in secular equilibrium, was modeledto demonstrate the effects of the rapid decay of
137mBa.
