BrNO
2 is produced by the heterogeneous reaction ofClNO
2, highly diluted in He, with an aqueousbro
midesolution and subsequent trapping at -155
mages/entities/deg.gif">C. The crude productis purified by trap to trap condensation andfractional subli
mation in vacuo. At 300 K and a pressure of 1
mbar, a half-life of about 1 h is observed. Thedeco
mposition produces Br
2 and NO
2. TheUV/vis and IR absorption cross sections of gaseous BrNO
2aredeter
mined in the ranges 185-600 n
m and 2000-400c
m-1, respectively. Irradiation of
matrix-isolatedBrNO
2with visible light causes nearly quantitative iso
merization to
trans-BrONO, while ClNO
2 is converted byUVlight into a
mixture of
cis- and
trans-ClONO.It is possible to assign all funda
mentals of BrNO
2and
trans-BrONO by co
mparison to the respective band position ofthe analogous
molecules XNO
2 and XONO(X = Cl, F).
