The aluminum chloride iodide LAlClI (
2, L = HC[(CMe)(NAr)]

3) hasbeen synthesized to study the stepwise hydrolysis of this compound in the presence of 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethylimidazol-2-ylidene as hydrogen halide acceptor. The isolation andcharacterization of the aluminum chloride hydroxide [LAlCl(
-OH)]
2 (
3) and the dihydroxideLAl(OH)
2 (
4) demonstrate the realization of a controlled hydrolysis.
