The morphology of the {101} surface of L-arginine trifluoroacetate (abbreviated as LATF) crystals has beeninvestigated by ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). Growth of LATF proceeds by two-dimensionalnucleation to form "stacks" of islands. Nucleation on the wider step terraces results in the overhang morphologyof steps. Step patterns indicate the occurrence of impurity pinning. The hollow cavities elongate along the<010> direction, which are attributed to the characteristic structure of the LATF crystal. It is believed thatthese cavities can lead to extra stress which will affect the arrangement of the lattice and further cause structuralmismatch.
