The synthesis and crystal structure of a
mixed valent
manganite CaMn
3O
6, equivalent to Ca
2/3Mn
2O
4,are reported, along with the
magnetic properties. The structure was deter
mined using electron diffractionand high-resolution trans
mission electron
microscopy and refined fro
m X-ray and neutron powderdiffraction data (
a = 10.6940(3) Å,
b = 11.3258(3) Å,
c = 8.4881(2) Å,

a,
RI = 0.037,
RP = 0.118). The structure is based on a fra
mework of double chains of edge-sharingMnO
6 octahedra. The corner-sharing chains for
m a fra
mework with six-sided tunnels, identical to that ofthe CaFe
2O
4 structure. The Ca
2+ cations are located in the tunnels. Co
mpared to CaFe
2O
4, one-third ofthe Ca positions in the tunnels re
main vacant, with an ordered distribution of vacant and occupied sites.The e
mpty sites in neighboring Ca chains are shifted relative to each other along the
c-axis by oneperiod of the CaFe
2O
4 subcell, which results in a sy
mmetry decrease fro
m orthorho
mbic to
monoclinic.Based on the interato
mic Mn-O distances, the charge ordering in CaMn
3O
6 is discussed. The co
mpoundexhibits a strong anti-ferro
magnetic character, and differences between the zfc and fc
magnetizationcurves at low te
mperature suggest ferro- or ferri
magnetic interactions.
