The organic compounds present in fine particulate roofingasphalt tar fumes are characterized using GC/MStechniques. Most of the compound mass identifiedconsistsof n-alkanes (73%). Polycyclic aromatichydrocarbons(PAH) and thia-arenes (S-PAH) contribute nearly 8% of theidentified compound mass and account for 0.57% of thetotal mass emissions. When compared to the PAH massfraction determined in fine particulate exhaust emittedfrom catalyst-equipped automobiles (~0.5%) and heavy-duty diesel trucks (~0.1%), roofing tar pot aerosols showaPAH content similar to that of vehicularexhaust.
