Gliotoxin (1), a fungal metabolite, inhibited acetolactatesynthase (ALS), one of the targets ofcommercial herbicides. The inhibitory effect of gliotoxin was morepotent against yeast ALS thanagainst tobacco cells. The ALS inhibitory activity of gliotoxinwas considered to be associated withthe 1,4-dione moiety. p-Benzoquinones andnaphthoquinones, which have 1,4-dione moiety, alsoshowed ALS inhibition. 2-Methyl-substituted derivatives wereespecially potent inhibitors of yeastALS.Keywords: Acetolactate synthase; gliotoxin; p-benzoquinone;naphthoquinone
